Description
Andrew College Staples Hall by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 187 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia (USA) was founded in 1854 and is the second oldest charter in the United States giving an educational institution the right to confer degrees upon women. It was originally called Andrew Female College.
The building shown in this photograph was built in 1900 and originally named Warren Bush Hall. In 2019 after a complete renovation the name was changed to Staples Hall after Sarah Anne Staples who was a Professor of Biological Sciences from 1957 to 1998.
The first floor of this three story building contains two classrooms, four seminar rooms, and a common area for students. The second floor is dedicated to the Nursing Department with one classroom, two seminar rooms, one lab, two simulation rooms, and four offices. The third-floor houses twelve offices, a conference room, and a faculty workroom.
The renovated structure is connected to the Old Main building, built in 1892, by Cuthbert Hall built in 1912.
The college is a private liberal arts college that is associated with The United Methodist Church.
The campus has an interesting history. It served as Hood Hospital during the American Civil War. A fire consumed the campus in 1892 and with money raised by the people of Cuthbert rebuilding began the same year with the college reopening in the fall in a building now known as Old Main.
In 1917 Andrew became a Junior College offering Associate Degrees. The college became co-educational in 1956. In 2018 the college began offering two four year degrees and additional baccalaureate degrees are being developed.
