Description
Art by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 62 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
My journal entries for March make up a series titled "From Letters to Words" using the letters that were created for the February entries. As March is Women's History Month (since 1987), several of my posts this month will be celebrating women in history.
Today I would like to pay tribute to Isabel Bishop. She was a painter, printmaker and graphic artist, born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1902, brought up in Detroit, Michigan and went to New York as a teenager (at 16 years old).
She first studied commercial drawing before changing to painting. She studied under Max Weber and then Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League of New York, where she later taught. At the Art Students League (from 1936 to 1937) she was the only female full-time instructor.
She was the first woman to hold an executive position in the National Institute of Arts and Letters when she became vice-president in 1946.
She was married and had one son. Bishop had her first retrospective show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York at age 72.
There is so much more to find out about Isabel Bishop and how she helped forge a respectable way for women artists. I hope that you search the internet to learn more.
