Description
Bay Saint Louis Bridge 2009 by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken in Bay Saint Louis, MS (USA).
Known locally as the Bay Bridge, this structure built over the Bay of Saint Louis, replaced a draw bridge that was destroyed in August 2005 by Hurricane Katrina. Building the bridge to an 85' vertical clearance eliminated the need for a draw. The 2.1 miles long structure between the counties of Hancock and Harrison (cities of Bay Saint Louis and Pass Christian) in Mississippi features a 12' wide walking path and four lanes for US Highway 90.
The Bay Bridge was the state's first design/build contract enabling the bridge to be built in record time by hiring the same contractor to do the design and construction.
One lane in each direction opened to traffic on May 17, 2007 ahead of schedule and all four lanes opened on time in November 2007.
The bridge won several transportation awards and set a record for the largest, fastest, continuously-sustained bridge reconstruction project in the United States.
