Car by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 83 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
My journal entries for March make up a series titled "From Letters to Words" using the letters that were created for the February entries.
On March 24, 1898 Alexander Winton sold the first American made gasoline car (the first recorded sale of an automobile) for $1,000. The car was shipped to the new owner, a mechanical engineer in Pennsylvania.
Winton originally built and sold bicycles. He started The Winton Motor Carriage Co. in Cleveland, Ohio to build gasoline powered cars.
He drove one of his cars from Cleveland to New York to promote his automobiles. His promotion enabled him to go from selling four cars to producing 25 cars a week with a price of $2,000 each. By 1915 the company had produced over 2,000 cars a year.
Winton, however, could not compete with the less expensive, mass produced vehicles by Ford in the early 1920s. In 1924 the company ceased automobile production and Winton closed the company.
After 1924 Winton concentrated on building diesel engines. General Motors ended up buying Winton out of the diesel engine company.
Winton bought back the first car he had ever sold from the original owner and it is now the property of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
