Description
Coconut Palm by Kathy K. McClellan is a minimal ink drawing created for Day Six of the Seven Day Black and White Challenge.
Coconut Palm trees are one of the most useful trees in the world and are often called the Tree Of Life or the Tree Of Wealth. They provide food, fuel, folk medicine, cosmetics, building materials and many other useful products. They are a major agricultural commodity for many tropical nations and are also planted as ornamental trees.
They are classified into tall and dwarf groups. The dwarf trees can grow up to 30' but more often are around 16' in height. They will produce fruit within 2-3 years but are short lived surviving only about 40-50 years. Their fruits tend to be smaller than the tall palms.
The tall trees grow to a height of 60-100' and can live up to 80-90 years. It takes approximately 6-8 years for the tall trees to produce fruit.
Coconut fruits are light weight, highly buoyant and water resistant. These facts led to a theory that they were dispersed around the world by ocean currents but that theory has been disproved. Explorers and ocean travelers carried coconut fruits on sea voyages mainly as a source of food and water. Many fruits that were not eaten germinated and were then planted in many places.
Coconut Palm trees have survived and thrived in tropical climates where they were either native or introduced.

So nice, Kathy. It amazes me how much your images say with so few strokes. Your minimalism is terrific!
