Description
Doll by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 68 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
My journal entries for March make up a series titled "From Letters to Words" using the letters that were created for the February entries. As March is Women's History Month (since 1987), several of my posts this month will be celebrating women in history.
This image and post is being created on March 9th. The Barbie Doll was officially launched on March 9th, 1959 at the American International Toy Fair.
I chose the Barbie Doll as today's subject because it is her birthday and she has influenced, for better or worse, thousands if not millions of girls who are now women.
Barbie was created by a businesswoman, Ruth Handler, who created her to show little girls that they could be anything they wanted to be. She named her Barbie after her own daughter whose name was Barbara.
Barbie is the head of a brand by Mattel dolls and accessories that has been the company's largest and most successful brand. Mattel has sold over a billion Barbie dolls.
Although surrounded by controversies, an entire media franchise has evolved including a long running series of animated films.
My Barbie doll had short blonde hair, several outfits complete with shoes and purses and she and her clothes all fit into a vinyl case. She and I had many adventures together and I played with her more than any other doll I can remember having.
Long live March Babies!

Interesting post, Kathy - I only had one Barbie (I was 9 when they went on sale), but I remember my daughter had five or six of them.

Thanks Mary. I actually had mine until 2005 when Katrina decided she wanted it...and everything else!
