Description
Ensuring The Next Generation by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image processed for Day Two of Challenge 23 (Theme: Garden Bugs). This is a vertical image.
A Praying Mantis is a gardener's friend. Although they will also eat beneficial insects they prefer the insects that do the greatest damage to crops.
The mantis shown in this photograph is a Carolina Mantid. They can be identified from other species by their shortened wings and eggs most often laid on vertical surfaces.
It is autumn and this female is laying eggs on a porch post that will overwinter and hatch in the spring. After laying up to 400 eggs the female covers them with a foamy substance (ootheca) that dries to a papery looking hard substance. The eggs will hatch while inside this sac.
During the warmer weather of spring hundreds of tiny praying mantis will emerge from the egg sac and start eating immediately. They have voracious appetites and are known to be cannibalistic.

I don't think there are any praying mantis in my yard this year but when there is I always consider that good luck. Everyone should look closely at your photo if you see something like that in your yard attached to plants branches wire or wood fence if you like praying mantis es leave them safely overwinter and when it warms up lots of tiny tiny praying mantis es will emerge. Nice photo.
