Essential oils are extracts from the roots, leaves, flowers or seeds of fragrant plants. They are called essential because they retain the essence of the plant.
In this photograph a trio of essential oils are placed on a cutting board placed on a kitchen counter. Their respective unprocessed plant material is shown next to each bottle.
Essential oils are stored in dark, glass bottles to protect the oils from bright light.
