Essential oils are extracts from the roots, leaves, flowers or seeds of fragrant plants. They are called essential because they retain the essence of the plant. Their use is varied, ancient and cross cultural. They are used aromatically by inhalation, applied topically and some of them can be taken internally.
Plant extracts have been used for medicinal, spiritual and therapeutic value since the beginning of time. Their recorded use dates to 3000-2500 BC.
Ancient civilizations used essential oils from plants in religious rituals, as herbal medicine, for digestive tonics, as perfume and for flavoring foods. There are over 500 direct and indirect references of essential oils in the Bible.
Distillation is the most common method of extracting the concentrated oils from the plants and a method that's been used for over 5,000 years.
Expression is a method of extraction specific to citrus essential oils. It is also referred to as cold pressing.
Several studies back up the anecdotal benefits of using essential oils and very few side effects have been recorded with their use, when used correctly.
The volatile constituents in these oils are highly concentrated and display various biological activities including antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, and antiviral. They work with our bodies on a cellular level. Individual oils can be blended and layered to provide a synergetic effect. Many hospitals in the United States are now diffusing essential oils in pediatrics, recovery rooms, cancer centers and other areas.
It is important to use high quality oils and make sure that they are free of contaminants, pesticides, and pollutants. Research the many companies that are producing modern essential oils to find pure, quality oils and experiment to see which ones might compliment your health and lifestyle.
