Description
Fallstreak Hole by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image for Day 205 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
I saw many amazing sights when we lived in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi (USA) and only a couple of hundred feet from the Bay of Saint Louis. Looking at or towards the Bay was almost always a treat for the eyes. Rare natural and odd man made phenomenon were amazing to witness and often a blessing to photograph.
This Fallstreak Hole or Hole-Punch Cloud was one of those rare occurrences of nature that I was not only blessed to see but fortunate enough to have my camera handy, as these events do not last very long.
When ice and super cooled liquid droplets coexist within a cloud, a process occurs where the ice crystals grow at the expense of the droplets. If the mixed cloud is agitated, the super cooled droplets freeze instantaneously. This starts a cycle where the newly formed ice crystals cause the surrounding droplet to evaporate, resulting in a circular void of clouds with a mass of crystals in the center.
What causes the agitation is commonly attributed to a jet flying down through the clouds but that is not the only explanation. Small scale atmospheric vertical motions related to the jet stream could bring ice crystals downward into the moist cloud layer and setting off the process described earlier.
Regardless of what causes these Fall streak or hole punch clouds, they are awesome to see.
