Though I am by no means an expert, I believe this "flat-topped" mushroom probably started out with a rounded cap. As mushrooms "deliquesce" (a nifty word I learned while doing research on one of my own mushroom photos last summer), the caps flatten out and may eventually even cup up. This ensures widest possible spread of their spores and, hence, assures reproduction. I know not whether this is true of this particular specimen . . . and is undeniably a flat top fungus. Beautiful colors - love the warmth of the mushroom tones with the cool greens of the grass.

Thanks Nikolyn!
