Description
Fly by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 66 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
My journal entries for March make up a series titled "From Letters to Words" using the letters that were created for the February entries. As March is Women's History Month (since 1987), several of my posts this month will be celebrating women in history.
Today we honor American Aviator Amelia Earhart.
In 1922, she set the women’s altitude record of 14,000 feet flying in her Kinner Airster biplane. In 1928 she flew across the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger. Soon after that she had two books published.
In 1929 Amelia helped form the the Ninety-Nines, an organization of female aviators.
In 1932 Amelia became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1937, on June 1st, Amelia left Miami, Florida with navigator Fred Noonan hoping to become the first woman to fly around the world. Sadly her plane lost radio contact with only 7,000 miles remaining and Amelia and her navigator were never heard from again.
Amelia Earhart was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross medal by the United States Congress after completing her solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Decades after her death she was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1968 and the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1973. There are also several commemorative memorials named in her honor around the United States.
