Description
A trip to the mailbox was an important ritual for Hurricane Katrina survivors. The daily mail could contain important paperwork from FEMA, a card of encouragement or even a donation for recovery.
However, surrounded by a sea of thick, sticky and sometimes slick mud, that walk to the mailbox could be tiring and sometimes dangerous.
One survivor was resourceful in collecting pieces of house siding and bricks from the area's debris fields to construct a sidewalk to make that ritual safer.
This photograph was taken in Bay Saint Louis, MS, ground zero for Hurricane Katrina.
