Description
Greek Ouzo is a photograph taken by Kathy K. McClellan for Day Five of the Seven Day Challenge with a specific theme: Liquid.
Ouzo is a liquor made from grape must (the remnants of wine-making) and is an aperitif. It's main flavoring is Star Anise but can also contail fennel, mastic, cardamon, coriander or cinnamon along with the anise.
There's a rich history to Ouzo and it's beginnings in Greece, most likely the Island of Mytilini (also called Lesvos), although the first commercial distillary was on the mainland in Tyrnavos in 1856. Ouzo from Lesvos is considered the superior liquor in modern times.
As an aperitif Ouzo should always be consumed with food. This is because of it's potent alcohol whose high sugar content delays the release of the alcohol into your system. It is often served with small plates of food called mezedes or meze. These snacks can be anything from seafood to cheese and olives. Scattered throughout the country and islands are ouzeries, small cafes that only serve Ouzo and Mezedes. It can also be served mixed with water.
Greece won the right to label Ouzo as an exclusively Greek product in 2006. It is one of the Greek drinks that are recognized by the European Union as products with a Protected Designation Of Origin. That recognition prohibits all European makers of the liquor from using the name Ouzo except for those in Greece and Cyprus.
The shot glass in this image displays the National Greek Flag.
