Description
Hercules The Rhinoceros Beetle by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day Three of Challenge 23 (Theme: Garden Bugs).
This Eastern Hercules beetle is a species of rhinoceros beetle that is native to the Eastern United States.
The larvae stage of this beetle feed on decaying wood from various trees. The diet of the adult beetle is not well known but they have been observed lapping up Ash tree sap.
The horns on the male beetles are used to fight off other males during mating season.
Hercules beetles are harmless to humans and most likely would not be a pest in your garden.
