Description
Interstate Bridge Nearly Complete by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 117 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
I was sitting in a fishing boat on the Jourdan River in Hancock County Mississippi (USA) when this photograph was taken in July 2004. The original bridge that carried Interstate 10 traffic over the river had been demolished and the new six lane bridge was nearly complete.
Our boat was barely up under the down river side of the bridge and the barge, carrying a crane and other equipment, was anchored on the up river side of the bridge. The area that the barge occupied was the site of the former bridge pilings.
Looking at the support for the new bridge, on the left side of this image, you can see the steel rebar where the final part of the bridge will be added for drainage and side railings. That section of the bridge could not be completed until the old bridge supports were removed.
The new bridge has nine main spans made with continuous steel. The span design is a stringer/multi-beam or girder design and the bridge deck is concrete cast-in-place.
It took two years from start to finish to build the new bridge and it was nearly complete when this photograph was taken.
