Description
Ionic Columns on Millen Church by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken by Kathy K. McClellan and processed for Day Three of the Five Day Architecture Challenge.
There were three orders of architecture in Ancient Greece and the type of supporting column used best distinguished each order. The crowns at the top of the columns is the easiest and most common way to determine the style of column. Between the unadorned Doric columns to the ornate Corinthian columns you will find the Ionic Columns.
The front portico of the United Methodist Church in Millen, Georgia (USA) contains two types of columns. The ones in this photograph, of which there are four on the portico, are Greek Ionic style columns. Closer to the structure, out of sight in this photograph and less noticeable overall are two, more ornate Corinthian columns.
The Ionic column is from Eastern Greece and is distinguished by two opposing scrolls or volutes. The newer addition built in the mid 1950s contains several Ionic columns, among other architectural items, to blend the newer structure to the original church building which was constructed in 1909-1910.
While looking for architectural features you may notice that there is also visible in this photograph rows of ornate corbels under the eaves. That feature is not repeated anywhere on the newer addition of the Millen Church although they, too were used often in Ancient Greek Architecture, as well as the Victorian era in which the church was constructed.
