My journal entries for March make up a series titled "From Letters to Words" using the letters that were created for the February entries. As March is Women's History Month (since 1987), several of my posts this month will be celebrating women in history.
We will be honoring three more women leaders who have made history.
Kim Campbell is a writer, diplomat, lawyer and politician. She held several government offices and was the first woman to serve as Minister of Justice in Canadian history and the first woman to become Minister of Defense in a NATO member state. She is best known as the first and only woman Prime Minister of Canada. After her political career she was an active leader in several international women's organizations.
Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike was born and married into politics. Following her husband's assassination when he was Prime Minister of the Dominion of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) she entered politics and became chairwoman of Sri Lanka Freedom Party and led her party to victory. She was the first female prime minister in the world and served three terms.
Golda Meir was born in Kyiv in Ukraine, educated and taught school in the United States, married and settled in Palestine on a farm. After serving as labour minister and foreign minister, Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969. She was the world's fourth woman Prime Minister, the first in any country in the Middle East and Israel's only woman Prime Minister. She has been described as Israel's Iron Lady.
My hope is that you will research the many other women in political history that made it possible for our contemporary woman leaders to serve.
