Description
Lovely Lane Chapel Saint Simons Island by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken in 2019 on the grounds of Epworth By The Sea, St. Simons Island, GA.
The chapel was constructed in 1880 and is the oldest standing church building on St. Simons Island. It was built by Norman W. Dodge and was formally named St. James Union Chapel.
Following a hurricane in 1897 the chapel was repaired but then was deconsecrated in 1911 to be used as a recreation center.
In 1949 The Methodist Church purchased the property and reconsecrated the church, naming it Lovely Lane Chapel, after the site of the 1784 Founding Conference of American Methodism in Baltimore, Maryland.
The chapel is used for a 30 minute worship service every Sunday and is available for wedding ceremonies.
