Description
Metal Milk Can by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken for Day Three of the Thirty Day Container Challenge.
Milk cans were metal containers that were used to transport small quantities of fresh milk to consumers. This was done at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century before the industrialization of dairy farms.
The earliest cans were small and had no lid. They were not always cleaned out very well and therefore not very sanitary. They were also not insulated so the milk would often sour in warm weather.
Today the early original metal milk cans are valued as antiques and collector's items. Reproductions are used as decor both inside and out. The milk can in this photograph is a reproduction that is being used in a boutique hotel as a waste receptacle.
