Description
Millen Church Addition by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph processed for Day Four of the Five Day Architecture Challenge.
The original United Methodist Church in Millen, GA (USA) was built in 1910. The addition shown in this photograph was constructed in the mid 1950s.
Several architectural features were incorporated into the addition to visually tie the two structures together.
Both structures were constructed with red brick and both feature raised brick in several areas.
As the front portico of the church features two styles of columns, the ornate Corinthian and the Ionic, the newer structure also features two different styles. However the addition sports not only the Ionic style but that style is paired with the less ornate Doric style columns.
Arches along the covered walkway or breezeway and over the entryway mimic the arched windows in the original building.
The keystones over the entrance arches are common in Ancient Roman Architecture. That ties the newer structure into the original church style of Richardsonian Romanesque style.
Finally, the addition is topped with a cupola whose roof is a metal bell shape suggesting a smaller, less ornate architectural cousin of the metal roofed dome on the original church.
