Description
Millen Methodist Rose Window by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph processed for Day Five of the Five Day Architecture Challenge.
Rose windows, also called wheel windows are circular windows mostly used in cathedrals and churches. The window shown in this photograph is considered a modern Rose Window, created in the early Twentieth Century, even though it is technically an octagon rather than a true circle.
The original circular window dates back to Ancient Rome and the Oculus, a large circular opening allowing light and air into a structure. From there the windows became more elaborate as they were enclosed with glass.
Positioning this particular window around the drum of the dome (which contains small windows around the entire dome circle) allows light to filter through the stained glass as the sun moves through the sky during the day.
