Description
Modern Jukebox by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day Twenty Seven of the Thirty Day Container Challenge.
As early as 1889 a coin-operated Edison cylinder phonograph in San Francisco was called a Nickel-In-The-Slot machine. Patrons listened to music through tubes because there was no amplification. In the late 1920s music machines called jukeboxes were actually coin operated phonographs. As technology advanced so did the jukebox replacing vinyl records with CDs.
A variety of music can be selected including rock and roll, country, rap, hip hop and more. Selections are made by pushing buttons that are marked with letters and numbers.
Small jukeboxes called Wall Boxes were also manufactured until the late 1960s. These small jukeboxes were hung off the wall and were popular at individual booths in diners and cafes.
The jukebox shown in this photograph is displayed in a hotel lobby. It contains CDs but is designed like the ones produced by the same company in the mid 1940s. It is called a Bubbler because as music plays bubbles float to the top of the colored tubes.
