Nutcrackers have a long and interesting history possibly dating back to the ancient Greeks. Nutcrackers in the form of wood carvings of a soldier, knight, king, or other profession have existed since at least the 15th century.
When wooden nutcrackers, produced in Germany in the 1800s became popular an entire cottage industry was born. Decorative nutcrackers became popular as holiday decor items in the 1950s, mainly in the United States.
