Description
Navy by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 80 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
My journal entries for March make up a series titled "From Letters to Words" using the letters that were created for the February entries. As March is Women's History Month (since 1987), several of my posts this month will be celebrating women in history.
This image is being created on March 21, 2022. On this day in 1917 Loretta Perfectus Walsh was sworn in as the first woman U.S. Navy petty officer. When she enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve on March 17, 1917, she became the first American active duty woman in the Navy and the first woman to enlist in any of the U.S. armed forces, as anything other than a nurse.
The United States Navy was the first branch of the U.S. armed forces to allow women to enlist in a non-nursing capacity.
Walsh completed two years of her four year enlistment in active service and inactive in a reserve status until the end of her enlistment in 1921.
Although women served in the U.S. military as nurses since 1901, they were considered civilian employees with few benefits. As a non-nurse, Walsh was the first of 13,000 WWI Navy women to receive the same pay, benefits and responsibilities as the men.
