Description
Old Whiskey Jug by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken for Day Nineteen of the Thirty Day Container Challenge. This is a square image.
Gallon Whiskey Jugs were used before the invention of the bottle machine but were used more as marketing tools than storage containers for distilled alcohol. Distilleries gave away "water jugs" or "Pub Jugs" for free as a way to promote their products.
These jugs were produced in several sizes, shapes and colors. The one in this photograph was common among moonshiners since it has no markings making it difficult if not impossible to trace. It features the funnel top and ear handles that were popular before and after the twentieth century.
Stoneware whiskey jugs are also used as musical instruments in Blue Grass and Country bands by blowing across the top of an empty jug.
These old whiskey jugs and modern reproductions can be found in most antique or vintage stores and auctions as well as gift shops in many country restaurants.
