Description
ONeal Bridge Over The Tennessee River by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 113 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
The O'Neal Bridge over the Tennessee River connects the cities of Florence, Alabama to the north and Sheffield and Muscle Shoals, Alabama to the south. This photograph was taken from the Colbert County side of the river in Sheffield.
The bridge is a Cantilevered Warren through truss designed bridge built in 1939. It was named after the O'Neal family. Edward O'Neal (father) and Emmit O'Neal(son) were both governors of the State Of Alabama.
O'Neal Bridge carries vehicular traffic over the river on US Highway 43. Originally the bridge had a pedestrian walkway down the middle of the bridge but that walkway was taken out in the 1980s to widen the traffic lanes.
