Paris is considered the center of fashion and many may think of France as the birthplace of parfum (French for perfume) but the truth is that perfume was around long before France was even a country.
Thousands of years ago humans were mixing plant oils to make fragrances that would give them a more pleasant odor.
A woman named Tapputi is considered the world's first recorded chemist in Mesopotamia. She developed scent extraction techniques that were the basis for perfume making.
The oldest perfumery (perfume factory) was discovered on the island of Cyprus during an archeological dig in 2004-2005. It was a huge factory that held over 60 stills, mixing bowls, funnels, and perfume bottles.
Hungary Water was made in Hungary in the 14th Century and was the first modern perfume being made with alcohol.
Eventually synthetic chemicals were used and perfumes were once again mass produced. Perfumery as we knew it came from early experiments.
