Description
Sepia Wagon To Walkers is a photographic image created for Day 269 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
This is a second version of the photograph titled simply Wagon To Walkers. The original color photograph was first converted to grayscale, taking out all color. A warm film filter was then applied to the image to create a sepia toned image.
The original photograph was taken looking down the lower deck of the Old Railroad Bridge in Sheffield, AL, built over the Tennessee River.
The bridge has two levels. In the past trains used the upper level and wagons used the lower level.
The original stone piers that were built in 1840 were anchored so well into the bedrock of the river that they are still in use today.
The original double decker bridge had a wooden frame but after storms, fire and a collapse in 1892 the superstructure was rebuilt using steel. The bridge has been used for trains, wagons, streetcars and pedestrians.
O'Neal Bridge (visible on the western or left side of the RR bridge) was opened in 1939 and the lower level of the Old Railroad Bridge was no longer used.
The bridge no longer spans the entire river. The lower deck has been restored and is presently used as a walking path over 1500 feet out over the Tennessee River.
A wealth of information on the bridge and it's history can be found on the Old Railroad Bridge Co.'s web site.
