Description
Silent Saturday by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 106 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday, is also known as Silent Saturday.
Silent Saturday is a day of quiet reflection with an anticipation of Easter morning.
Jesus was crucified on Friday, wrapped in linen and laid in a tomb (grave). He rose from the dead on Sunday. But on Saturday he was silent. His mortal body lay silently in the grave.
Many people believed or said that God was silent on Saturday. They didn't see any miracles, Jesus being raised from the dead, the Roman Government being overthrown. What Jesus's family and followers saw and did on the day after his death was silence. Grief. It was a Sabbath for them. They grieved. For all practical purposes they were silent.
There are several traditions for Holy or Silent Saturday in the Christian community and those traditions have changed over the centuries.
However, one tradition that is practiced by many is an evening service that includes fire. Outside fires are built and lit after dusk. A large special candle called a Paschal candle may be included. Smaller candles held by individuals may be used. The type of fire and candles will depend on the denomination.
Fire, however it is included in the Saturday evening service, represents Jesus Christ's light to the world. His life, death and resurrection lighting up the darkness of evil/sin.
I hope that when you view this image you will reflect on it's representation and spend some silent, quiet time resting in God's light.
