Description
Soaring Steeple by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 246 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
Zooming along on an Interstate Highway through Columbus, Ohio (USA) this steeple caught my eye when it was off in the distance. I quickly rolled down my window and started snapping photographs until we had passed the church.
This particular capture shows that the steeple and bell tower rise high above the surrounding trees.
It is one of the most elaborate steeples that I have seen on a Protestant church and it belongs to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Columbus.
The Columbus congregation was formed in 1856 and the cornerstone for the church building was laid in 1857. Church services were held in the basement until the church was completed. The steeple and bell tower, however, were not completed for another 20 years.
There was too much detail to view as we drove by on the highway but it can be seen in this photograph.
Arched brickwork above the sanctuary windows is located right below the bracketed cornice at the roof line. The brick tower rises above a detail carved wooden base.
The windows in the bell tower are arched and contain wood lattice with a detailed pattern. Above the tower windows a cross is carved into a wooden circle.
More arched brickwork follows the roof line to a peak on each side of the tower. Those brick arches include white painted decorations at the bottom of each arch.
Notice the white steeples at the corners of the tower roof which mimic the taller, main steeple towering about the bell tower itself.
The main steeple is clad in hexagon shaped shingles, echoing the six sides of the main steeple. Outlined in white trim the gray shingles are interrupted halfway up the steeple by framed, lattice filled windows on every other side of the steeple.
Finally, high above the church roof, the steeple is topped with a cross whose vertical piece has a rope texture painted white and whose horizontal piece looks like a giant metal nail and is painted a dark gray.
