Description
Southern Live Oak by Kathy K. McClellan is a minimal ink drawing created for Day Seven of the Seven Day Black and White Challenge.
The Southern Live Oak is a majestic tree that unlike other oaks is nearly evergreen. Live Oaks will lose and replace nearly all of their leaves in a short period of several weeks in the spring.
Although they can produce a crown with a diameter of 150' most Live Oak crowns have a spread of 50-60'. They are long lived trees becoming hundreds of years old. One such tree in the state of South Carolina in the United States (Angel Oak) is estimated to be 1,500 years old. Another tree in the state of Louisiana (Seven Sisters Oak) is approximately 1,000 years old. There are many other Southern Live Oak Trees in Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana that are at least 300 years old or older.
The name "Live" oak came about because they are alive (or evergreen) most of the year, even when other oaks are bare of all leaves.
Southern Live Oak is a symbol of strength in the south and is the official tree of the State of Georgia (USA).
It is believed that the battleship U.S.S. Constitution received it's nickname Old Ironsides during the War of 1812 because cannon balls actually bounced off its tough hull made from Southern Live Oak.

Kathy, I grew up with oaks, this is instantly recognisable, I knew what it was before I read the title. You huve captured it in so few lines.

Love the shape of this! We have big old Oaks on our property and this looks like one of them!

Thanks Gaby for visiting and saying that this does look like a Southern Live Oak!
