Description
Southern Magnolia Sky by Kathy K. McClellan
Looking up into the sky
On a warm spring afternoon.
Magnolia leaves and blooms appear.
A sight that will fade all too soon.
The summer will come and the blooms will fade.
But the evergreen leaves will endure.
Their green will remind us of plans that we made.
When the warm days of spring first appeared.
Magnolia grandiflora is a tree of the family Magnoliaceae native to the southeastern United States, from coastal North Carolina to central Florida, and west to East Texas. It is also commonly known as the southern magnolia or bull bay.
It is an evergreen tree with fragrant blooms appearing in late spring. The flowers are large and have a heavy lemon citronella scent.
Although native to the lowland subtropical forests on the Gulf and south Atlantic coastal plain, magnolia grandiflora is widely cultivated in warmer areas around the world. The timber is hard and heavy, and has been used commercially to make furniture, pallets, and veneer.
The Southern Magnolia is the state flower of Louisiana and Mississippi.
This particular tree was photographed in Hancock County, Mississippi along the Jourdan River.
