Description
Tank Wheels And Track by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 127 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
The wheels and track in this photograph are part of an American Military tank that is located in Spring Park, Tuscumbia, Alabama (USA). According to the Afv Register (Armoured fighting vehicle) the tank is an M60A3 Main Battle Tank (MBT).
The purpose of the wheels is to turn and stabilize the track. The three track support wheels are roller wheels used to hold up and carry the upper portion of the track to the idler or sprocket wheel. Only the bottom portion of each roller wheel is shown in this view.
The six road wheels support the weight of the tank on the lower portion of the track.
The idler wheel is seen in the upper right corner of the image. It permits the track to roll and helps maintain track tension, but neither drives the track nor supports the weight of the tank.
The drive sprocket can be seen in the upper left corner of the image and transfers the power from the engine to the tracks.
All eleven of these wheels help maintain the ability of the tank to move and maneuver across the terrain.
