Description
The Old Railroad Bridge Side View is an image created for Day 119 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
This image is a photograph of the Old Railroad Bridge in Sheffield, Alabama. The photo was taken from the bank of the Tennessee River.
The bridge has two levels. In the past trains used the upper level and wagons used the lower level.
The original stone piers that were built in 1840 were anchored so well into the bedrock of the river that they are still in use today.
The original double decker bridge had a wooden frame but after storms, fire and a collapse in 1892 the superstructure was rebuilt using steel. The bridge has been used for trains, wagons, streetcars and pedestrians.
The bridge no longer spans the entire river. The lower deck has been restored and is presently used as a walking path over 1500 feet out over the Tennessee River.
