Description
The Old Railroad Bridge Upper Level by Kathy K. McClellan
This photograph shows the upper level of the historic Old Railroad Bridge in Sheffield, AL. This level was used as a railroad bridge while a lower level was first used by wagons, then a streetcar and now pedestrians.
The bridge was originally built in 1840 with an all wood frame. After several storms, a fire and total collapse in 1892 the superstructure was rebuilt from steel.
The bridge is no longer in use and does not span the entire river at the present time. The lower lever has been converted to a pedestrian walking trail and this upper level is gated barring public access.
The Old Railroad Bridge Co.'s web site holds a wealth of information on the bridge and it's history.
