Whip It Up by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day Five of the Seven Day Macro Kitchen Challenge.
A whisk is a cooking utensil. It is used to blend or smooth ingredients or incorporate air into a food mixture. They consists of a series of wire loops joined at the end. The loops can have different shapes depending on a whisk's intended functions.
Some are long and narrow and some are bulbous depending on the ingredients being mixed or whipped and the vessels used, such as a long narrow whisk used in a skillet or a more bulbous one used in a bowl.
Originally whisks were made of wood twigs, such as apple, peach or bamboo. Later metal was used and finally, with the invention of non-stick cookware they were made from plastic or silicone.
Because they can introduce air, they are commonly used to whip eggs whites into a firm foam to make meringue or to whip cream into whipped cream.
A whisk is most handy in the kitchen when you want to "whip it up"!
