Description
This photo was taken on West Ship Island, MS in August 2004. One year later most of the sand from in front of the fort had been washed away in Hurricane Katrina (8-29-05). Much of the island has been restored since then.
Ship Island is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and is maintained by the US Parks Dept.

I love these old forts and their history - nicely captured with the contrasting sand and dune grasses.

Did you notice the different colored bricks? There were years inbetween the start of construction and the finish and the fort was held by different countries and they used bricks from different areas as the ownership changed hands. It's easier to see from another angle but you can see it if you look at the window openings.
