Lighthouse On Oak Island by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken at Caswell Beach, North Carolina.
The lighthouse at Caswell Beach, NC was built on Oak Island in 1958. When it was first activated the lights that were used were the brightest in the United States and second brightest in the world. The lighthouse lost that distinction in 1962 when the the lower bank of lights, using carbon-arc mercury lamps in 36-inch reflectors, were decommissioned.
The lighthouse is 153 feet tall but stands 162 feet above the water of the Atlantic Ocean since it is built on a rise on the island.
A series of ships ladders with a total of 131 steps leads to the lantern gallery level.
Although the US Coast Guard maintains the upkeep of the lights, the town of Caswell Beach now has the responsibility for maintenance of the lighthouse and surrounding grounds.
