An example of a Mid-Century wall made of Rotary Pattern Breeze Blocks.

Artist's Description

Rotary Breeze Block Wall by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 178 of the 365 Challenge.

Breeze Blocks, as they are known, are considered Mid-Century architecture because they were very popular during the 1950s and 1960s in the United States.

However, their use was based on sunscreens made of other materials that were used in Asia and other warm climate areas of the world decades before.

One of the first uses of these concrete blocks was in the American Embassy in New Delhi in 1954. These blocks were decorative, filtered sunlight and allowed breezes through the walls of concrete.

The first concrete breeze blocks were only decorative but the blocks that Frank Lloyd Wright used were also structural.

There are many different patterns of breeze blocks. Some patterns were exclusive to a local manufacturer. The pattern shown magnified on the wall in this photograph is a popular one called The Rotary.
