Rust Belt Rusty Bridge by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 112 of the Journal 2022 Challenge. Today was the second day that I looked for bridge images to process and upload. I found this interesting capture in one of my folders.
The bridge in this image is an abandoned railroad bridge in Steubenville, Ohio. It crosses the Ohio River from Steubenville to Weirton, West Virginia. No longer in use, the bridge, made of steel, is not being painted or maintained in any way. It is left to rust among the trees.
A large area stretching from the northeastern United States to the Midwest states was once known as the Manufacturing Belt, Factory Belt or Steel Belt. However, in the latter half of the twentieth century (and especially after 1980) that area became known as the Rust Belt. This was due to the decline in industry, mostly steel, coal and auto manufacturing. Steubenville, Ohio was one of those cities in that area.
