Trillium Twins by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken at Shoal Creek Preserve in Florence, Alabama.
These two Trillium plants were discovered along one of the many hiking trails at Shoal Creek Preserve. The preserve is one of many properties owned by the Forever Wild Land Trust in the state of Alabama, United States. FWLT owns approximately 270,000 acres and Shoal Creek Preserve encompasses 298 of those acres. Fallow fields, mature upland hardwood stands and scenic creek bottoms are included in the preserve.
Those hardwood stands provide a fertile environment for the trillium plants who require shade and well mulched soil. There are about 50 flowering plant species of these wildflowers and 39 are native to the US. Trillium are native to North America and Asia.
They are long lived plants that can live up to 25 years.
