Description
Wet Wellies by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day One of Challenge 24 (Theme: Umbrellas And Boots).
Whether you are gardening or hiking in wet and marshy areas, waterproof boots can be a necessity and a convenience at the very least.
The waterproof boots shown in this photograph have been set out in the sun to dry.
Wellies, short for Wellington, is a British nickname for waterproof boots. The name comes from the original leather waterproof boot designed for the Duke Of Wellington who, in the early 19th century, instructed his shoemaker to modify the 18th century Hessian boot.
Today these boots are made from several materials including rubber or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a halogenated polymer. They are used in agriculture and several industries.
Although they were first made to come right below the knee, they now come in various heights including a clog version.
