Description
Charleston Cobblestone Street by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Week 28 of the 52 week Art Challenge (Theme: The World Outside). This image is in a vertical/portrait orientation.
A cobblestone path gradually recedes into the distance, composed of multicolored stones of various shapes and sizes. The wet surface suggests recent rain, giving the stones a glossy appearance and accentuating their colors.
Some of the oldest streets in Charleston, South Carolina (USA) are the original cobblestone streets. Although these streets can survive centuries they are not the easiest surface to walk or ride a bicycle on.
Originally, cobble size stones were set in sand. It appears that the street in this photograph has had the spaces between stones filled with asphalt.
Vehicular and horse drawn carriage traffic can be noisy on a cobblestone street. Although some people perceive that noise as a disadvantage it helps to warn pedestrians of traffic coming from behind them.
