Description
Shadowbox Countertop by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day Four of the Five Day Art Challenge (Theme: Kitchens).
The kitchen island in this photograph was designed to highlight the homeowners triumph over the property's disastrous history. The house that had contained the china was blown apart in Hurricane Katrina along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Only a few pieces of the china set were found on a neighboring property.
A shallow box, covered with thick glass, was built as a countertop for the island.
Sand obtained from a sandbar on one of the local rivers lined the bottom of the box. Broken pieces of the owner's former china, seashells and driftwood from the sandbar were placed in the sand.
Because it took years to recover and rebuild, the owners wanted to celebrate and be forever grateful that unlike the china, they survived intact.
