Description
A Snare At The Fair by Kathy K. McClellan is a Black and White photographic image created for Week 15 of the 52 week Art Challenge (Theme: The World Outside).
This photograph was taken in Florence, Alabama (USA) during the Official Alabama Renaissance Faire 2023. The festival is held annually in downtown Florence in Wilson Park.
This drummer, a guitarist and a woman who played both the guitar and flute were performing in one of the music venues set up in the park.
The drum is called a snare drum because there are multiple wires (called snares) stretched out under one of the heads of the drum. It is the vibration of the snares when the head of the drum is struck that makes the drum's sound. This drummer was using drum sticks called mallets, named because the ends of the sticks are circular and padded making a softer sound than wooden drum sticks.
There is also an open tambourine and small microphone mounted along the outside of the drum within reach of the drum sticks or mallets. Those miniature cymbals on the tambourine are called jingles or jills.
Both the drum and tambourine are percussion instruments.
