Description
Cleat Trio On Pinta by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 195 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
Two of the three ships that Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas, the Nina and Pinta, have been reproduced and sail around North America for educational purposes. They are caravel-type sailing vessels used in the 15th and 16th Centuries.
This photograph was taken on Pinta, the larger of the two ships. She was built in Brazil and launched in 2005.
The horn cleats shown, located on the starboard (right) side of the ship and used to secure rope, are made of wood whereas most modern horn cleats are made from metal, usually stainless steel or rubber. They are a tiny portion of the rigging used on this large sailing ship.
There is also a replica of the Nina, a smaller caravel and the two reproduction ships sail to ports in 30-40 different locations around the United States. The ships travel the Gulf Coast, the East Coast, the Great Lakes, and the Midwestern River System. Pinta is also available for private parties and charters.
You can tour these ships and even volunteer as a crew member. Their schedule is posted on their web site.
