Description
Nina's Cargo Hold by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for the Sketch/Photo Challenge 34 (Theme: Box).
This photograph was taken on the reproduction ship Nina, one of the three ships that Christopher Columbus sailed to the Western Hemisphere. It was built in Brazil in 1991.
The view in the photograph is of two boxes. The largest box is actually a cargo hold below deck. The lattice work provided ventilation for the hold.
The smaller box sits atop of the lattice work over the cargo hold. That smaller box holds a sword like one that the captain would have carried with him as he traveled the high seas.
There is also a replica of the Pinta and the two reproduction ships sail together to ports in 30-40 different locations around the United States. The ships travel the Gulf Coast, the East Coast, the Great Lakes, and the Midwestern River System.
You can tour these ships and even volunteer as a crew member. Their schedule is posted on their web site. Schedules can change slightly depending on weather conditions.
