Sunset Explosion by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image processed for Day 171 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
The first time I experienced this extraordinary event I was actually dumbstruck. Standing on a pier in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi (USA), I'm sure that my mouth was hanging open as I gazed at the sky.
I was admiring the sky as the sun was slipping through clouds on it's way to the horizon when suddenly the clouds above me literally exploded in color.
The clouds in this photograph look like someone has thrown gasoline on a fire. There are multiple shades from yellow to orange. The further east the clouds are, the more likely they are to keep their dark blue/gray color. But those western clouds are so vivid you almost need sunglasses to look at them.
One of the amazing things about this event is that it happens in seconds. One minute the clouds are blue or gray and within seconds these rich sunset colors explode across those puffy pockets of water vapor.
Every time I look at a photograph of one of those color explosions in the sky I am amazed and grateful to have witnessed such an extraordinary phenomenon.
