Description
Three Hummingbirds In Khaki by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic collage created for Week Two of the 52 week art challenge: The World Outside.
This collage features three images of female Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds in Northwestern Alabama in mid September. The three photographs are surrounded by a khaki colored border.
The photograph on the far left shows a hummingbird as she is starting to fly off of the uppermost branches of a tall shrub. The early morning sun highlights her cream colored chest that is in contrast to the dark brick wall behind her and the plant.
The middle photograph features a female hummingbird as she is coming in to land on the uppermost branch of a tall shrub. Her wings are outstretched and still moving as can be seen as a slight motion blur. She is also looking straight at the camera as the shutter makes soft clicking noises.
The photograph on the far right shows a female hummingbird resting on a branch after flying around the camera, other shrubs and the nearby feeder filled with sugar water. Her image is a side profile rather than the portrait facing photographs in the other two images.
These female Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are gathering nectar and human supplied sugar water as they are preparing to migrate south, most likely to Mexico, although some of them may winter in the southern most portions of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
